About Egyptian marble

Most stone traded as Egyptian marble is, geologically, a dense limestone that takes a polish. The cream Galala family is quarried on the Galala Mountain near Suez, the warm Sunny and veined Sylvia stones come from Minya in Upper Egypt, and Triesta (Sinai Pearl) and Katrina come from the Sinai Peninsula. Grey Nile stones and the brown Egyptian Emperador complete the range.

Because they behave like limestone, Egyptian marbles are usually sealed and specified with a honed or textured finish in wet and busy areas, while polished faces suit walls, vanities and interior floors. Denser stones such as Galala and Triesta are widely used outdoors for facades, steps, pool copings and paving. Colour varies between blocks, so large projects are best ordered in one batch against an approved sample.

Frequently asked questions

Is Egyptian marble real marble?

Most Egyptian marble, including Galala, Sunny and Triesta, is geologically a limestone that is dense enough to polish, which is why the trade calls it marble. Specify and care for it as you would a limestone: seal it and prefer honed finishes in busy or wet areas.

Which Egyptian marble is best for outdoor use?

Galala and Triesta Beige (Sinai Pearl) are the usual choices for facades, steps, pool surrounds and paving, in honed, brushed, bush-hammered or sandblasted finishes. The softer Sunny stones are better kept to interiors and light-use exteriors.

What is the difference between Galala and Sunny marble?

Galala is a cream stone from the Galala Mountain near Suez with soft, even mottling. Sunny comes from Minya and is warmer, from pale beige (Sunny Light) to amber (Sunny Dark), and is slightly softer and more absorbent than Galala.
